Do your students struggle with long and short vowel sounds? Mine do, especially my EL kiddos. Learning Resources contacted me about reviewing their {new for 2014} Vowel Owls Sorting Set and how could I say no when the owls are SO stinkin’ cute??
Not only are they cute, but they are perfect for stations and small group (of course it doesn’t hurt that when they are not in use, they look adorable on my shelf!!)
Here is their description from the Learning Resource site:
Vowels of a feather gather together to make phonics and word recognition a hoot! Help students distinguish long from short vowels in single-syllable words using engaging picture cards. Sort the cards into the correct owls labeled with the vowels. Use the extra “blank” owl for “sometimes y” or to distinguish long from short sounds of the same vowel.
The bright and cheerful birds are perfect for my EL kiddos who struggle with distinguishing those pesky middle sounds…the picture cards are easy to identify which helps a lot!

Happy Sunday!
I teach K and vowels, both long and short are a hard concept. This would be an awesome kit to have!
I teach Title 1 Reading. This would be GREAT for my small groups. Vowel confusion is something many of my students struggle with.
Oh! This would be great for small groups! I love LR products!
I could definitely use this for both. I could introduce it in small group guided reading and then put it in my literacy centers for independent work.

I would introduce it in small groups; then it would become an independent activity for my kinder kiddos. And it would match my owl theme!
These would make a great sorting station activity!
These are adorable and they would totally match my new owl themed room. I think I would start off using these in small groups at the table and then use them for centers.

These are exactly what I have been looking for to use in my classroom. I teach special education an we are really needing something that is hands on and not a worksheet. My students could use this in their daily work boxes, in centers, or small groups. It is another way for me to engage them in their learning. Plus they love sorting things out 🙂
