Vowel Owls Giveaway

Do your students struggle with long and short vowel sounds?  Mine do, especially my EL kiddos.  Learning Resources contacted me about reviewing their {new for 2014} Vowel Owls Sorting Set and how could I say no when the owls are SO stinkin’ cute??
Not only are they cute, but they are perfect for stations and small group  (of course it doesn’t hurt that when they are not in use, they look adorable on my shelf!!)
Here is their description from the Learning Resource site:
Vowels of a feather gather together to make phonics and word recognition a hoot! Help students distinguish long from short vowels in single-syllable words using engaging picture cards. Sort the cards into the correct owls labeled with the vowels. Use the extra “blank” owl for “sometimes y” or to distinguish long from short sounds of the same vowel.
The bright and cheerful birds are perfect for my EL kiddos who struggle with distinguishing those pesky middle sounds…the picture cards are easy to identify which helps a lot!

  1. These are exactly what I have been looking for to use in my classroom. I teach special education an we are really needing something that is hands on and not a worksheet. My students could use this in their daily work boxes, in centers, or small groups. It is another way for me to engage them in their learning. Plus they love sorting things out 🙂

  2. So cute! And I agree, even adorable when not in use! I would use in small group or share with a helper to use as review after I have done a lesson first.

  3. These adorable vowel owls would be perfect to use during guided reading mini-lessons. So often my kiddos need lots and lots of practices discriminating between the vowel sounds! This is a great, motivating way to do it:)

  4. I would use this as a station and in a group with my students who are having difficulty distinguishing between the vowel sounds. Cute and practical!

  5. I would first use this in small groups so everyone knew how to play on their own. Then it would become a literacy center. I think I would like to keep them somewhere visible b/c they are also good for classroom décor!

  6. Until my kinder-bears have a true ownership of short vowels, I would use this in small group or with my paraprofessional in one-on-one intervention times. After some have mastered vowel sounds, I will move it to a station with a leader helping a student still gaining strength.

  7. I would introduce in small groups (assessed through Words Their Way) and use with groups that are appropriate, then they would get to use to reinforce their learning independently!

  8. This is adorable and so useful! I would introduce it in small groups to familiarize the kids and then use it as a station during rotations. LOVE LOVE LOVE

  9. I'm a Speech Language Pathologist who would love to use these with my articulation students. These would be prefect for my push-in groups too!

  12. These are just too cute! They would be used first in a teacher group; then in small group, and then for review and for struggling learners. They would also be cute out on a shelf and could be used for a center. Wonderful product.

  20. I would use it in small groups but also as a ticket out the door to recess. It's amazing the focus a child will give to a tough skill when recess is at risk.

  21. I would use it first at a teacher-guided small group center & then introduce later as an independent center. My classroom is owl-themed, so that's an extra plus! 😉

  22. I would use these all year in my workstation. I would pull them and use them exclusively when introducing (Guided Instruction) them in word study. I would also put them on the shelf for students to use independently throughout the year. Looks like a great product.

  23. OH MY GOSH! How cute are these guys??!!! I would use them in small group to begin with and then use them as as individual work station. I'll be buying 'em even if I don't win!! BUT I WOULD LOVE TO!

  24. I love this! This would be wonderful for my stations. About half of my incoming students are ELL and really could use the extra practice, along with all of my other firsties, of course!

  25. These would be great in any classroom! Good for small group or centers & always great for review. Not to mention these would work great with my owl themed classroom 😀

  26. I can see this being easily used in small group and stations. However, I would probably start off using it in small group for introduction and then into stations later.
